About RUMACCC
RUMACCC is located in the School of Languages & Linguistics at the University of Melbourne.
It conducts, and disseminates the results of, research in Australian and international contexts in fields such as:
- the maintenance and development of bi- and multilingualism, including language demography
- language in social context
- bilingual education and sociolinguistic aspects of second language acquisition - bilingual language acquisition - inter-cultural communication
- language policy
The unit facilitates cooperation between researchers, those who are the subjects of research, and the potential users of research.
It may extend into other areas of language and society. The research tries to stimulate discussion on language policy which will be of significance for Australia but also act as a catalyst for similar research and policy development overseas.
The Unit conducts action research in school programs and work contexts.
RUMACCC runs workshops on topics such as:
- raising children in more than one language
- starting up a bilingual or second language program at school
- teaching background and non-background students
- getting the best value from a bilingual or second language program
- models of teaching Languages Other Than English
- inter-cultural communication in the workplace or between professionals and clients/patients
- Melbourne's language demography
It hosts international scholars with expertise in relevant fields.
