Visitors to RUMACCC in 2003
- Prof Lars-Gunnar Andersson (Professor of Swedish. Göteborg University) gave talks on language policy and language attitudes in Sweden. Dr Christine Béal (Université Paul Valèry) discussed the address project with the research team.
- Prof Sally Boyd (Professor of General Linguistics, Göteborg University) gave a seminar on language policy in Sweden.
- Prof William Bright (Professor Emeritus of Linguistics and Anthropology, University of Colorado) gave a talk on writing systems.
- Prof Tove Bull (University of Tromsø) discussed her work on Sami-Norwegian bilingualism.
- Professor Nils Hasselmo (President, Association of American Universities), one of the pioneers of research into code-switching, was the guest of honour at a roundtable on language contact research.
- Assoc. Prof David Li (City University of Hong Kong) held a seminar on a novel method of gaining insights into transference patterns and attitudes of Cantonese-English bilinguals.
- Dr Regula Schmidlin (Basel) gave a seminar on the dictionary of German as a pluricentric language in which she is involved.
- Prof Sally McConnell-Ginet (Cornell) spoke on language used to describe "family".
- Prof. Lise Menn (Professor of Linguistics at the University of Colorado).
- Prof Peter Nelde (Director of the Research Centre for Multilingualism, Brussels), the Faculty Visitor, gave several talks (in three languages) on European language policy, language contact and conflict, and the language situation in Belgium.
- Dr Regina Schmidlin (University of Basel).
- Dr Hannie Vermaas (University of Leiden), an expert on the Dutch address system, exchanged ideas on the topic.

Community Languages in Practice
Organised by Sandra Kipp and Catrin Norrby to coincide with the visits of Peter Nelde and Sally Boyd, included 14 papers, in addition to responses by our guests, in a one-day workshop, Papers were mainly by Melbourne University staff and PhD students but Monash and Victoria universities were represented by one paper each. A volume of papers from this workshop is being considered by a leading international journal.

Maximising your Children's Language Potential
A conference organised for principals, teachers and school administrators from government schools. Most of the talks featured findings from RUMACCC projects. Michael Clyne gave a plenary and other talks were given by Dr Suzanne Döpke, Dr Michelle de Courcy, Prof Michael Clyne, and a joint presentation by Germaine Youssef, Irene Liem and Tina Issakidis.
