Background to Modern Standard Arabic

The term 'Arabic' can be used to refer to either of the following:

  1. Modern Standard Arabic - used in praying, preaching, television news, written documents and formal education; or
  2. One of the various national varieties employed in everyday communication in the countries of the Arab league. Examples include Lebanese, Iraqi, Palestinian and Egyptian Arabic, which are the varieties most commonly spoken in Australia. There are also many other national varieties.

The school subject Arabic involves the students learning Modern Standard Arabic.

The students do not have the opportunity to practise the language while shopping or conversing with people from the Arabic community, as these activities are typically conducted in one of the Arabic dialects, not in Modern Standard Arabic. As part of our project, students took part in several activities aimed at providing them with opportunities to practise their Modern Standard Arabic.

These activities were designed and developed by Germine Youssef.
